The body of this pen is made from Narrow Leaf Mallee, a shrub-like tree that grows in southeastern Australia. When certain trees experience a focal area of stress or injury, they sometimes form a disorganized growth, called a burl, containing highly figured swirls of wood that is prized for its beauty and rarity. The wood I used to craft this pen came from such a burl. To complement the wood, I chose Cascade pen components plated with gold titanium, a hard metal that resists wear. The pen is further highlighted with a rhodium-plated nib and clip. Rhodium is a precious metal in the platinum family that is both brighter and harder than platinum, making it an ideal plating for a pen. A decorative band also circles the pen below the wood.

The writing tip is exposed by twisting the finial of the pen. This pen uses readily available Parker-style ink refills that can be accessed by unscrewing the nib.
