The body of this pen is made from Axis deer antler. This deer is native to India, however was introduced into Texas in 1932 for hunting. There are now over 40,000 Axis deer in Texas, most on hunting ranches. The deer shed their antlers annually, so no deer was harmed in the crafting of this pen. The antler can be turned on the lathe using standard turning tools. After shaping, the antler is then sanded and protected with over 12 coats of cyanoacrylate. Finally, this is wet-sanded and polished to a high gloss before assembly. To complement the antler, bright rhodium and titanium gold platings are utilized on the upper and lower portions of the pen as well as a decorative band below the body of the pen. This pen measures 4.9 inches in length and weighs 1.6 ounces.

This pen takes a readily-available Parker-style refill that can be accessed by unscrewing the lower gold nib. The refill is extended by twisting the finial at the top of the pen above the clip.
